Big Stone County has no independent jail

This changed. Big Stone County does NOT operate its own standalone jail. The Sheriff's Office (11 SE 2nd St, Suite 101, Ortonville, 320-839-3558) can only hold arrestees briefly (roughly under 72 hours) before transferring them elsewhere. A June 21, 2023 CBS News Minnesota report, relaying a Minnesota BCA investigation statement, explicitly states 'Big Stone County does not have a jail available' and that a Big Stone County arrestee was booked into the Lac qui Parle County Jail in Madison, MN instead. Lac qui Parle County's own official site (lqpcomn.gov) confirms it operates a jail/'In Custody' list, with Sheriff's Office phone 320-598-3720. Big Stone County's own official site (bigstonecounty.gov) has no jail-specific department page, consistent with this. Could not confirm this is an exclusive, permanent contract (case-by-case placement with other neighboring counties is possible), so treat Lac qui Parle as the currently-documented arrangement rather than a guaranteed sole contractor.

Calling the jail

Have the person's full name and date of birth ready. Booking can usually confirm whether someone is being held, and when they are due before a judge. Minnesota requires a first appearance within 36 hours of arrest, not counting the day of arrest, Sundays and legal holidays (Minn. R. Crim. P. 4.02, subd. 5).

Jail phone lines are recorded. Don't discuss the facts of the case on them — save that for the attorney.

Statewide, VINELink can confirm custody status and notify you of a release.
