County Jails · Grant County
Grant County has no independent jail
This changed. Grant County does not appear to operate its own jail. No jail/corrections page or department exists on the county's official site (grantcountymn.gov); the Sheriff's Office page there covers patrol/DARE/records but no detention facility. When the county built a new Law Enforcement Center (Grant County Herald, July 2023), then-Sheriff Jon Combs was quoted saying 'demand for building new prisons and jails is low' while explaining the new building covers 'law enforcement, fire and medical services' — implying it does not include a jail. Local reporting (Grant County Herald, Dec. 2020, 'Murder putting stress on Sheriff's budget') states a Grant County defendant 'is currently being held in Douglas County,' and a Douglas County Jail booking record lists 'GRANT COUNTY' as the arresting agency for another inmate — both indicating Grant County uses the Douglas County Jail (Alexandria, MN) for detention. I could not find an explicit written contract confirmation on either county's official website; recommend calling the Grant County Sheriff's Office (218-685-8280) to confirm the current jail-services arrangement in writing.
Calling the jail
Have the person's full name and date of birth ready. Booking can usually confirm whether someone is being held, and when they are due before a judge. Minnesota requires a first appearance within 36 hours of arrest, not counting the day of arrest, Sundays and legal holidays (Minn. R. Crim. P. 4.02, subd. 5).
Jail phone lines are recorded. Don't discuss the facts of the case on them — save that for the attorney.
Statewide, VINELink can confirm custody status and notify you of a release.
